Time Machine 2018: Ted Colbert, Commander of the Digital Flight Deck
With a decade of experience in digital innovations for aerospace, Ted Colbert has become a pathmaker for the industry. As the CIO and Senior Vice President of Information Technology & Data Analytics, he is responsible for IT strategy, operations, and the management of 6,500 IT and analytics employees for the world’s largest aerospace organization: The Boeing Company.
Colbert has held a number of executive positions at Boeing, but the common denominator between these positions is his use of applied science to maximize the efficiency of aviation. His experience culminated in the creation of Boeing’s Digital Flight Deck, a cluster of real-time digital models that support Boeing leadership’s decision-making.
The Flight Deck has been a watershed innovation for Boeing. It saves approximately 100 workers’ worth of manual data collection and chart creation every month. Forbes lauded Colbert for the Digital Flight Deck, awarding him the 2018 CIO Innovation Award. He also received the inaugural Fisher Center prize for Excellence in Driving Digital Transformation from the University of California, Berkeley.
More than just a force of change for the aerospace industry, Colbert also seeks to help others through his philanthropic work. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for multiple organizations such as the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF). TMCF awards scholarships to students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, such as Colbert’s own alma mater of Morehouse College, granting students a vital network for success later in life.
As the chief of information science and technology in aviation, Colbert is here to help us clear AI for takeoff.
